Fleeting (Forever)
I walk along the Yarra Birrarung when I feel unmoored. Sun speckled and streaming steady for millions of years, long before me, and long after. In the face of its lifetime, I pass by in seconds, a leaf fallen into its current, carried and let go. Meandering along, sinking slowly in the riverbank, the closer I get to the edge.
These images are created with the same sunlight that shimmers atop the river. I feel connected, harnessing the natural world to visualise the small moments I lived in.
Two images from this series were exhibited in River Dialogues: A Melbourne and Osaka Photographic Exchange, a cross-cultural exhibition presented in partnership with the Japan Institute of Film and Photography (SHASEN) in Osaka. The exhibition will explore themes of sustainability, green infrastructure, and the evolving relationship between urban landscapes and waterways. It will focus on Melbourne’s Yarra Birrarung River and Osaka’s Yodo River.
River Dialogues celebrates the long-standing civic relationship between Melbourne and Osaka. These parallel exhibitions highlight the shared commitment of both cities to environmental responsibility and creative exchange, forming a visual conversation between two distinct but interconnected places.
My images explore the long standing presence of the Yarra Birrarung, which has existed long before us, and will continue long after us.
This exhibition will be held on level 19 of the PwC building in Melbourne, overlooking the Yarra Birrarung, and at Osaka Town Hall, as part of Expo 2025.
